Hi [REDACTED],
Thanks for reaching out--and for caring about your school. I know uncertainty is stressful. No decision has been made to close TIDE Academy. On November 12, the Board asked the Superintendent to bring a process and timeline to the December 10 meeting that shows how the District will discuss and consider TIDE's future--and how students, families, and staff can be heard.
We respect what makes TIDE special--its small-school community and programs like dual enrollment, CTE, and Nucleus. Looking at a process doesn't take away from that value. At the same time, the District is facing a structural deficit, which means ongoing costs are rising faster than ongoing revenue (because of things like inflation, enrollment shifts, and limits in funding). Very small schools also tend to cost more per student, which can limit the number of classes and programs over time. That's why we need a careful, student-centered process.
There will be an opportunity in January for students to share input directly with the Superintendent; we'll send details once the date is confirmed.
What to know right now:
- No decision has been made, and school continues as usual.
- You can follow and speak during public comment at the December 10 Board meeting.
Thank you again for your message--your voice matters, and we're listening.

Dear SUHSD Board of Education
My name is [REDACTED] and I am a 10th grader at TIDE Academy. I chose to attend TIDE because it had the best support for me and my education. Another reason I came to TIDE was because of the community that aims to learn here. I believe that TIDE should remain open because TIDE has one of the higher graduation rates compared to places like MA, Woodside, and Sequoia. Another reason is a little personal because it involves the support TIDE offers to kids who are struggling and you really can’t get this kind of support at bigger schools. TIDE has offered an abundance of ways to help support students. From what I see , I feel TIDE does the best at helping kids pass due to the small class size allowing people with ADHD, Autism, or just anything neurodivergent to prosper and get the individual help they need and deserve. I also feel that the community is very accepting of TIDE, there is little to no hate at the school and a lot of groups seem to not be judged by how they look or how they identify. As someone who's seen what they say in other schools and how slurs are thrown around like casual words I believe TIDE is a much safer environment for everyone. I would like to reiterate that TIDE should remain open because it offers so many opportunities for people who don’t get them to graduate and prosper, before TIDE I was a terrible student and even freshman year I didn’t do so well, but I am making huge improvements and I urge the SUHSD Board to think of how incredibly difficult the idea of seeing TIDE close will be on all past, current, and future TIDE students and how this can affect all of our lives. Sincerely, Class of 2028
